Dachau Concentration Camp - Munich, Germany - February, 2008 : Dachau, about ten or so miles outside of Munich, Germany, was the first concentration camp under the Nazi regime. The leadership of the camp set a precedent for fear, torture and death that was the model for the concentration camp system from 1933 to 1945. Hundreds of thousands were imprisoned here, and almost 50,000 lost their lives on the site. Walking through the barren ground and halls of the buildings makes one realize: this site laid the groundwork for literally millions of deaths over a 12-year period. On the one hand, thoughts of disbelief and anger come to mind. How could this have happened? And why is the site still here? On the other hand, it takes a tremendous amount of courage by the German people to openly show and remember one of the biggest scars on humanity in modern times.
